Halloween Counting Cards

Getting the cards ready is quick and simple! I just printed them out (I used cardstock for extra sturdiness) and laminated them so that they can be used over and over again in our math centers.

Then I cut them apart so that I had a set of counting cards for numbers 1-20 with a fun pumpkin, candy, or cat theme.

I grabbed some play dough and pom poms and we were ready to play!

This set of counting cards includes a fun pumpkin, candy, or cat theme on each card.

Play dough is always a hit in my classroom and I always have pom poms on hand, but any small manipulative will work perfectly for this activity!

Rolling the play dough into small balls is great for building fine motor skills. Counting and placing the play dough balls or pom poms on the cards is great practice for one-to-one correspondence.

These counting cards not only show numerals for 1-20, but number words as well. Often as we progress through fall, Kindergarteners become stronger at recognizing numbers and counting and are ready to start reading number words.

Teacher Tip: You can keep the cards as they are or cover up the numerals with a sticker for an extra challenge.

Time to Play!

I typically set up counting cards in baskets with the manipulatives so all the supplies are easy to grab and put at a table for a math center choice.

To play, kids pick a card, identify the number or read the number word, and then count out the corresponding number of manipulatives. They place the manipulatives on the card!

Counting cards are some of my favorite things to use in the classroom, and my kids always love them too!
