Spring is in the air, and I am starting to see some baby cows on my drive home from work each day. My students also love to tell me if they passed any on the bus ride. Let’s just say farm animals are a hit right now! As usual, I love to turn these interests into fun, themed learning activities for my kids! Since we are working on building up our graphing skills, this free Farm Animal Spin and Graph Activity is a great way to get graphing practice in, while having fun too!

This activity is perfect for math workshop, small groups, or even as an independent whole group activity to introduce graphing and recording data. It is super easy to get ready so let’s grab our supplies and get started!

Supplies Needed:

Time to Play!

For this graphing activity, students use a pencil and paperclip to create a makeshift spinner. Simply, put the tip of the pencil in the paperclip, give it a flick, and see where it lands!

Kids always love this part. Something about flicking the paperclip is so exciting!

Once they land on a farm animal, they color or mark a box above that animal with an ‘x.’ Students continue to play until one column reaches the top. That animal is then declared “the winner!”

Other Ways to Play

Extend the game (and save paper too!) by placing the spin and graph printable inside a dry erase pocket sleeve. Then kids can either mark the boxes with a dry erase marker or use fun plastic farm animal toys to mark the spots!

These variations give the game a whole new twist that is so engaging!

I typically play a paper version first to teach the game, then I switch to having the pocket sleeve version in math bins for a while so that the kids can play multiple times!
