Gingerbread Sight Word Game

Since this sight word game is editable, it is great for BOTH Kindergarten and 1st grade! Customize the recording sheet and dice with any words of your choice.

Simply type 5 words that you would like your students to practice into the sight word generator page. The words will auto-populate on the sight word recording sheet as well as both the printable die and pocket die cards!

How to Prep

To prep this activity, print the Gingerbread Sight Words recording sheet, printable die, and pocket die cards.

I recommend laminating the printable die and pocket die cards for easy assembly and durability. Grab some crayons, colored pencils, or markers for your students to color their graphs and you’re ready to play!

This sight word game includes a Gingerbread Sight Words recording sheet, printable die, and pocket die cards.

Teacher Tip: Laminate the recording sheet and have students use dry erase markers for recording their answers. So fun!

Ways to Play

This sight word game can be used as an independent literacy activity OR played in partners and turned into a sight word race!

It can be played with either the printed die that’s included or you can use pocket dice.

To play, students begin by rolling the sight word die. Next, they say the word on the die and then color in the square above the sight word that was rolled on their recording sheet.

If the Gingerbread Snap” is rolled, then the student gets to choose any word on the recording sheet to color in.

To play, kids begin by rolling the sight word die. Next, they color in the square above the sight word on their recording sheet.

If playing independently, the game continues until the player fills his/her graph up completely.

If you are using this activity as a partner game, the kids continue rolling, reading, and coloring until one of them reaches the top of their graph first!

Students can use a different color for each sight word on their recording sheet.

Differentiated Learning

  • For early learners who are just learning the letters of the alphabet – you can type 5 letters into the editable generator page. Students can then practice their letters and sounds!
  • If students need a little extra challenge you can print out CVC or CVCe words.
