Goldfish are a staple in many young kids’ homes (although we have always opted for the prettier but less social beta fish) so they are a great choice for this letter G craft!

My kids had a few months where they wanted me to read “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” every day… and it’s been awhile since you’ve read it, let me tell you – it’s loooooong.

But because Dr. Seuss is such a wordsmith, the kids really stay interested and focused for the entire reading, which is a great skill to build.

For our craft, we combined our love of gold fish and a subtle nod to one of my kids’ favorite books.

You can also add in Goldfish crackers to attach to your goldfish bowl – we didn’t because we plan to assemble all of our crafts into a Letter Workbook at the end and I didn’t want the crackers to get all smashed into crumbed.

Letter G Craft – G is for Goldfish Craft

First, gather your materials:

  • Gold, blue and red construction paper or cardstock
  • Glue sticks
  • Scissors (for the teacher/parent)

Using the scissors, prepare the shapes needed for making your goldfish letter craft – each child will need:

  • 1 letter g
  • 1 fishbowl shape
  • A few different fish

Provide the children with the necessary shapes and a glue stick and let them get to work!

I took the opportunity to read Dr. Seuss’s One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to the kids as they were decorating their goldfish bowls.

Have the kids assemble their crafts in whichever way appeals and makes the most sense to them – my kids stuck to one fish of each color, but there’s no need to limit the fish in your (paper) bowl!

As with all of my letter crafts, I try to remind myself that the importance of the craft isn’t that it looks perfect or that the letter is on full display. The point is the process – during which the children become more familiar with the letter, its shape and its sound. Having a cute craft at the end to show for it is just a bonus!

Our G is for Goldfish Letter G Craft is a great addition to a Dr. Seuss Day and are going to look great in our Letter Workbooks when they are completed!

Also, if your kids are loving on the fish-theme, be sure to check out our Rainbow Fish Scratch Art project which was a super easy and fun way to practice writing our names.
