Fun Books for Early Readers

Kat Kong by Dav Pilkey

Kat Kong has fun real life pictures mixed in with the drawings.

This hilarious book has my kids cracking up every time we read it! The best part, in my opinion, are the fun real life pictures mixed in with the drawings. It really makes the book stand out as something unique and fun. In this story, Dr. Varmint and Rosie Rodent have made a terrifying discovery – the big beast known as the terrifying Kat Kong has broken loose and is rampaging through the town of Mouseopolis! What will they do? This story makes adults and kids alike laugh and want to read it again!

Dogzilla by Dav Pilkey

Dogzilla makes adults and kids alike laugh and want to read it again!

Going along with the spirit of Kat Kong is Dogzilla! This time, the mice of Mouseopolis are having a barbecue cook-off when the aroma of barbecue sauce awakens the frightening creature – Dogzilla!! The mice try to outrun the horrible breath and save themselves! What will happen? This book is hilarious, and even more so because the dog is so friendly looking in the images, making it even more funny that he is called Dogzilla.

Little Pink Pup by Johanna Kerby

Little Pink Pup is always one of the books for early readers that has my students' captivated attention.

This is a true story of a little pig named Pink, the runt of the litter, who was basically adopted by a dachshund mama dog named Tink when he was brought into the house for care in order to survive. Tink’s puppies didn’t mind that Pink didn’t look like them. After all, he was just their size! Tink and her pups welcomed Pink, and he thrived with his new family. This heartwarming story is always one that has my students’ captivated attention, as the real pictures and the fact that this really happened peaks their interest and leaves them wanting more. Plus, who doesn’t love cute animals?

He Came with the Couch by David Slonim

He Came with the Couch is a funny tale about acceptance and friendship.

Sophie and her family have a new couch – a great couch – a perfect couch! However, there is a problem. There is someone, or some “thing” that is in that couch! Can they get rid of him? Do they want to? This funny tale is also about acceptance and friendship, and it was highly requested in my classroom!

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith

This fractured fairy tale is a hilarious twist on what readers thought they knew about the three little pigs.

This fractured fairy tale is a hilarious twist on what readers thought they knew about the three little pigs. In this story, the wolf wants to tell his side, and what really happened. For example, did you know the wolf is innocent? He was framed! This fun twist is great for older readers as well.

Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner

Skippyjon Jones is about a Siamese cat who thinks he is a Chihuahua because of his big ears.

The Skippyjon Jones series  is one of my absolute favorite books for early readers! I especially love to get them on audio set because the author reads them aloud so well, with such great voices! SkippyJon Jones is a Siamese cat who thinks he is a Chihuahua because of his big ears. With a big imagination, he goes on many adventures. With high action, funny antics, and some silly made up words, this story quickly becomes a favorite, and your little readers will soon want the whole collection!

Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

Duck! Rabbit! is an award winning book that is short, simple, and oh so fun!

Is it a duck or a rabbit? That is the question! Before I read this story, I love to ask my students what they think it is – you will hear different responses! This award winning book is short, simple, and oh so fun!
