Themes and Skills for Pre-K and Kindergarten Lesson Plans

I know that some teachers are told exactly what to teach and when to teach it by their districts. Others are left to create their own schedule and map everything out on their own. That can be stressful! It can be hard to know when we should introduce new skills. We also need to consider how long to cover each skill to provide adequate practice for our students.

On top of the skills that need to be taught, what about all of the themes that we need to cover (Labor Day, bats, spring, community helpers, emotions, etc.) in Pre-K and Kindergarten? The list goes on and on.

Some themes lend themselves to specific months, right? We know that a bat or spider theme lends itself well to being taught in October. Flowers and seeds are more of a spring month theme. But others are more general and could really be covered at any time.

Over the years, I figured out how to get everything covered in a way that makes sense to me. I couldn’t wait to share it with you. I have compiled a Mega List of Themes and Skills for each month. From August to June, I have listed exactly what themes and skills I cover in my classroom with my students!

I have compiled a Mega List of Themes and Skills to teach for each month from August to June.

It’s Linked to Activities!

Once you have everything planned out, it can still be tricky to find activities that are appropriately themed for the time of year AND the skill you need to cover. So I have searched through the vast Kindergarten Connection resource bank for you and linked the themes and skills listed for each month of the year to a resource, article, or activity that you can use in the classroom!

Obviously, you will need more than one activity to teach each skill. Don’t worry! We have A TON of additional activities you could use any time of year with your students.
