Beginning readers must not only learn to decode letters and their sounds, but they must also learn that some letters work together to make new sounds, and that vowels are not always “short.” These free Printable Digraph and CVCe Activities provide fun practice for your students as they work on identifying digraph sounds and reading long vowel words!

Digraph and CVCe Activities
Your students will love practicing digraphs and CVCe words with these “Read, Find, and Color” Digraph and CVCe Activities! They are super fun and super easy to prep because you just print and that’s it!
I like to let my students pick their favorite tool for coloring – crayons are great but when we get out the colored pencils or markers it adds another level of excitement to any activity!
Printable Digraph Activities
Digraphs are two letters that work together to make a new sound. They are important to recognize and identify because there are several words that contain them.
Common digraphs taught in Kindergarten are: ch, th, wh, ph, and sh. In 1st grade these are often reviewed. All 5 digraphs are covered in this pack of printable activities.
In the printable digraph activities, students identify the digraph in the magnifying glass. Then they search for pictures that contain that digraph sound. They color only those pictures.
Printable CVCe Activities
After students learn short vowel sounds, they are then introduced to long vowels. This usually includes learning what is often called “magic e”. This is seen in words that follow a consonant, vowel, consonant pattern with an e at the end. The “magic e” changes the vowel sound from short to long. Examples include: cape, hide, and robe.
In the printable CVCe activities, students read each word in the box. They then find the pictures that best match the words.
There are other words that contain the same long vowel sound. Students must be sure to read the words carefully before coloring the pictures.
This set of CVCe activities includes a printable page for vowels a, i, o, and u only. This is because there are not many words that follow this pattern for the vowel e.

Hi there!
Could you help me with the words from the “WH” activity? I´ve noticed in all of the other digraphs activities there are 6 words, but I only found 5 words in WH – whale, whiskers, whisk, whistle, wheel… Are there only 5 or 6 like in the other ones?
I have been asking many teachers and no one could help me.
Thanks in advance,
Hi Nanda,
Great question! You can do a search in google for “wh digraphs” and you’ll get a few more “wh” digraph words. Just doing a quick search, I was able to find a couple more like, “wheat,” and “Whiteboard.” I hope that helps! Have a great day!
can I just buy the long vowels?, without the digraphs?
