Beginning readers must not only learn to decode letters and their sounds, but they must also learn that some letters work together to make new sounds, and that vowels are not always “short.”
These free digraph and CVCe printables provide fun practice for your students as they practice identifying digraph sounds and reading a variety of long vowel words.
About the Printables
Digraphs are two letters that work together to make a new sound. They are important to recognize and identify because there are several words that contain them.
Common digraphs taught in Kindergarten are: ch, th, wh, ph, and sh. In 1st grade these are often reviewed. All 5 of those digraphs are included in the free printables.
In the digraph set, students identify the digraph in the magnifying glass and search for pictures that contain that digraph sound. They color only those pictures.
After students learn short vowel sounds, they are often first introduced to long vowels by learning what is often called “magic e” – words that follow a consonant, vowel, consonant pattern with an e at the end that makes the vowel long. Examples include: rake, tide, and made.
In the CVCe set, students must carefully read each word in the box and find the picture that best matches the word.
There are other words that contain the same long vowel sound, so they must truly read the words in order to complete the page. Students color the pictures that match the words.
There is a printable page for vowels a, i, o, and u only, as there are not many words that follow this pattern for the vowel e.
