Find and Color Garden Digraph Activity

When students are familiar with the alphabet letters and their sounds and blends like “sl”, “br” etc., you can introduce digraphs.

What are Digraphs?

Digraphs are 2 letters that are pronounced together to form a unique sound. It is best to teach the digraphs as a unit because it is the sound we hear in a word.

For instance, when spelling the word “ship”, one would spell it phonetically-like you would hear it, “sh”, “i”, “p” and not “s”, “h”, “i”, “p”. Teaching digraphs as units makes it easier to remember when reading and writing it

How to Use this Printable

This printable activity is great for revision of digraphs after you have introduced them individually.

This is a great independent activity for a literacy center. It also develops fine motor muscles when picking up the tiny buttons, beads or pompoms and adding it to the flowers. Provide a tweezer to pick up the items as an extra challenge.

Ways to Play

  • Find the digraphs and color the flowers with markers or crayons to fill your garden!
  • Use Bingo Daubers to color your garden digraphs
  • Make the garden digraph printable reusable. Laminate the colored version, then provide red, pink, yellow, orange, blue and purple buttons, beads or mini pom poms for the students to place in the middle of the correct digraph flower.
