Addition and Subtraction Fall Math Mats

Fall is the most beautiful time of year…in my opinion. At least that’s what I remember from growing up in the midwest. Now that I have roots planted in the hot desert, I don’t experience all the beauty of fall until the end of November. To be honest, it still doesn’t compare to the smells and colors of fall back east. Today I’m so excited to share with you our Fall Math Mats because they remind me that fall is so near! Addition and Subtraction Fall Math Mats

These addition and subtraction Fall Math Mats are suitable for kindergarten and 1st grade. You can use them in your homeschool or traditional classroom. I like to put them in my math center. You could also use them in small groups or send them home for students to use at home for extra practice.

To get started, first gather your materials.

  • Print and laminate the Fall Addition and Subtraction Math Mat Printables
  • Dice
  • Dry Erase Marker and Eraser
  • Manipulatives for counting ( I used leaves and acorns from the dollar store)

I like to laminate my math mats for use year after year. It also makes this activity more effective when the children can use dry erase markers to write in the math equations. If you don’t have access to a laminator then you might try slipping the printables inside of a sheet protector. I’ve used them this way as well!

Addition

Students will start by rolling 2 dice (or one die, twice) and then writing the numbers in the equation at the bottom of their addition math mat printable. They will then build their equation with manipulatives that match the corresponding number.

Lastly, children will solve their addition problem by adding up all the leaves and acorns on their fall tree. Using a dry erase marker, students will write that number in the 3rd box of the addition equation.

What I like about using the acorns and leaves is it shows the 2 parts of the addition problem. Part one is in the first box and is represented by the leaves and part two is in the second box and is represented by the acorns. I also think the acorns are so cute and I couldn’t resist grabbing them at the dollar store!

Subtraction

Students will start by rolling one die to find their starting point.

They will then place that many number of leaves on their fall tree. Students will then write the number rolled on the die, in the first box of the equation.

Students will then roll a second die (or one die, twice) to find the second part of the equation. The second number rolled is how many leaves that will be removed from the fall tree to show what is being “taken away.” Children will write the number in the 2nd box of the math equation.

Lastly, students will then count and write how many leaves are left on the fall tree, in the 3rd box of the equation to get their answer!
