Dinosaur Short Vowel Sort
Short vowel knowledge is important before moving on to long vowels. Identifying vowels in short words, CVC words, is one of the earliest skills a reader needs to decode a word correctly.
This can happen automatically for some readers, but other students might need extra practice doing that.
Preparing the dinosaur vowel sort activity:
Print and laminate the free dinosaur word cards and sorting sheet. Cut the cards and it is ready for the literacy center!

Using the Dinosaur Vowel Sort activity:
Confident CVC word readers can use the activity independently – reading the words and sorting the cards on the sorting sheet.
Some readers might need help decoding the words, in which case an individual assisted activity or small group setup will be best.
TIP: Color or trace the vowel a different color, maybe even use a highlighter, to make it easier to visually identify.
There are six cards per vowel for the most commonly used CVC words, making it 30 dinosaur word cards, altogether.
More Ways to Play!
Another fun idea on how to use this dinosaur short vowel sort printable: Turn it into a game by printing more sorting sheets.
Six players can play with one “pack” of cards. Place the dinosaur word cards face-down in the middle of the players. Take turns to pick up a card, read it and place it on an empty, correct vowel block. Player with all 5 blocks filled first, wins!
