Do you have any young dinosaur fans around? I know I do! When my students are interested in something, I try to play off that interest and build on it with our learning activities if I can.
When it comes to my dinosaur fans, we engage in plenty of fun dinosaur books, practice number and color words with our own dinosaur emergent readers, and then keep building on those skills during math workshop with these fun dinosaur counting cards!
To get the cards ready, I print them out and laminate them. I will often use cardstock if I am using the school laminator for class activities.
Like with most of what I print, if I use my home laminator and lamination sheets (they are so much better!!), I just use plain paper.
There are two sets of dinosaur counting cards. One has numbers, and the other one has number words. This means you can differentiate for your students, or use one set for awhile and then the other!
Students count the dinos on the cards and then clip the correct number or number word. We use clothespins because they are great for building up those writing muscles!
I use the cards during math workshop in one of our bins for small groups. I put all of them in there together since my kids are all at different places with what they are ready for (Some are ready for number words and some are not) but you could decide if you want to just use both, or just focus on one set at a time.
