Color Words Emergent Readers

My students love when we turn reading practice into an interactive activity. These emergent readers allow kiddos to write in and color the books (something we do not usually do), making these readers extra exciting and engaging. Plus, after all of their hard work, they get to keep them and take them home to show off proudly!

These Color Words Emergent Readers are super easy to prepareJust print double sided, cut in half, staple, and voila – you have two books ready to go! This is great for saving paper.

Each book contains a focus color and fun pictures for the students to color.

What’s Included?

This resource pack contains 11 emergent reader books, each with 7 pages and focusing on a specific color and color word. They are great for whole group instruction, guided reading groups, or independent reading!

The following color books are included:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Black
  • White
  • Brown
  • Gray

These readers contain predictive text patterns to support early readers, and picture support as well!

How to Use the Color Words Emergent Readers

I typically use the emergent readers in small groups with my students, depending on their needs. We go through and highlight or underline the color words and identify additional sight words.

After we practice reading the book together, I then have students color the pictures independently and put the readers in their class book boxes for continued independent reading.

Your students will love coloring the fun pictures to make the books their own.

Another great thing about these printable books is that I can easily run off an extra copy if I want the students to also have one at home for additional practice!
