St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner and my kids love anything leprechaun or clover-themed! These Clover Addition and Subtraction Cards from our St. Patrick’s Day Centers and Activities Bundle are great for small groups, centers, or independent work. They are super versatile. Clover Addition and Subtraction Cards
These Clover Addition and Subtraction Cards are great for Kindergarten and 1st grade. My favorite way to use them is in our math centers. They’re especially fun to use with themed mini erasers or any green manipulative. Or laminate the cards and use green dry erase markers to color in the ten frames!
How to Prep
Begin by printing and laminating the addition and subtraction cards. Laminating them makes them durable and reusable! This is perfect if you are using the cards in your math centers.
Set out the clover addition or subtraction cards (whatever you are working on) and a set of manipulatives to solve the equations. Any small manipulatives work! We love using our green counting bears.
With these cards, the kids can see the parts of the equation and build the answer in a tangible way!
How to Use the Addition and Subtraction Cards
For building a subtraction problem, it’s important to teach the kids to always start with the largest number and place that number of manipulatives in the ten frame. Then, they “take away” the second number in manipulatives to find their answer.
When using dry erase markers for building the subtraction problems, encourage the students to color in the ten frames to match the larger number in the math equation.
They should then look at the smallest number in the equation and erase that many ten frames to find their answer.
For the addition cards, students simply look at the first number and place that number of manipulatives in the ten frame. They then place the second number of manipulatives in the ten frame and count to find the total sum!
My students were really able to grasp the concept of adding and subtracting numbers in a very hands-on way. Not only were they learning a skill that can sometimes be difficult for young children to grasp, but they were also having fun!

Songs are powerful AND super fun too! That’s why we want to share with you one of our favorite songs for building subtraction skills!
This is a simple song that will make working on subtraction extra fun. It’s sung to the tune of “5 Little Ducks” and is perfect for singing with your kiddos at Circle Time!
