Christmas is coming very soon! Are you and your students excited to begin all the lovely Christmas themed learning activities and crafts? This one is a super fun and festive activity for you – Christmas Tree CVC Words! It is a hands-on, seasonal way to practice CVC words in the classroom or at home!
*Pair this with our December Kindergarten Printables Bundle!

Christmas Tree CVC Words Activity
This fun and engaging CVC words activity is so simple to prep. Plus, it also uses simple supplies that you probably have on hand!
For this activity, you will need:
- Letters (I used foam letters)
- 3 felt Christmas trees
- Finger puppets (stick puppets work great too!)
I used felt trees because I had them on hand (I had cut them for another activity), but you can use cardboard trees or simply draw trees. I also already had this adorable gingerbread man finger puppet that my kids adore.
Teacher Tip: Have your students make their own Christmas stick puppets as a craft lesson and then use them for this literacy activity!

How to Use this Activity
You can use your spelling words for the week or pick letters randomly to build a word that makes sense. When you let the students pick random letters, make sure it is a consonant, vowel, consonant pattern (great for reviewing consonant and vowel knowledge).
Some words will be nonsense words, but that is a good opportunity to distinguish between words that make sense and nonsense words. Also, if you are working on 4 letter words (CCVC or CVCC words), add another tree and follow that pattern.
This literacy activity is super simple, using a technique that is tried and trusted with early readers – the “Tap-Tap-Tap-Slide” technique. Tap each letter with the puppet and then slide down the trees saying the whole word. Segmenting and blending in a fun way!

You can also play this game with this Christmas tree setup, again using your spelling words for the week or randomly picking letters.
Start with a word, then change only one letter to make a new word. Do this until you have used up all the letters or run out of real words!
For example – mug changed to mum, changed to sum, changed to sun, etc.

This is a fun Christmas tree CVC words activity your early readers are sure to love!
