Christmas Tree CVC Word Match
This CVC word matching activity includes 10 printable ornament cards and a corresponding recording sheet. Each ornament card has a picture of a CVC word on it.
Easily prep the printable activity by printing the ornament cards on cardstock and laminating them for durability. Then cut the ornament cards apart on the gray dotted lines. Set them aside in a basket.
Make as many copies as you need of the recording sheet. Grab some crayons and it’s time to play and learn!

Ways to Play
I find that introducing activities like this in my own classroom as a whole group makes it easier to work with the activity in small groups.
I go over the basic directions, exaggerate non-examples, and give my preschoolers the idea of their expectations as they come to the table to work. It’s also important to go over each ornament card so that the children understand what each picture is.
To play, students pick an ornament card from the pile. Next, they identify the picture on it. Then they find the matching word on the Christmas tree and color in the correct ornament.
When they are done, they pick another card and play again until all cards have been picked and all ornaments have been colored in.
Teacher Tip: Add an extra element of fun by using manipulatives like pom poms or mini-erasers to cover up the ornaments instead of coloring.

To make the Christmas Tree CVC Word Match activity self-correcting, write the correct CVC word on the back of each ornament card in pencil so it does not show through. This helps when no teacher is available to work with the group at this particular center activity.
You can also save paper by adding the recording sheet to a dry erase pocket sleeve and giving your kiddos dry erase markers to color!

A great way to reuse the ornament cards in circle time is to play a rhyming game with them. Young children have an easier time rhyming simple words without many syllables. CVC words are perfect for this!
There are so many ways to practice CVC words, but this Christmas Tree CVC Word Match is perfect for December!
