The tree is going up, lights are being hung, and Christmas music will soon be playing on the radio! I absolutely LOVE Christmas and love having fun, festive activities for the kids to complete. We have been spending lots of our time practicing rhyming words lately and this free Christmas Lights Rhyming Words Activity will be a great addition to our Christmas literacy activities in December!

*Pair this with our Christmas Centers and Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten!

Children can practice rhyming with this free Christmas Lights Rhyming Words Activity. It's perfect for the holiday season!

Christmas Lights Rhyming Words Activity

This activity is great for Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st grade literacy centers and is perfect for the holiday season. Plus, prep is easy!

To get this activity ready, simply print the Christmas light strand page and the Christmas light bulb cards. Laminate everything for durability and cut them out. Then you’re ready to play!

To prep, print, laminate, and cut the Christmas light rhyming strips and Christmas light bulb cards.

How to Play

To play, start by lining up the strands of Christmas lights and laying out the individual bulb cards. You can make each card line up so you have one long line of Christmas lights or use each one separately like pictured.

Students pick a light bulb card, say the name of the picture on the card, and find the rhyming word on the strand of lights. Then they lay the card on top of the rhyming picture.

They continue matching each of the light bulbs to the bulbs on the light strands until they have matched all of them together.

Once all the bulbs are matched up, students can use the recording sheet to match up the pictures by drawing a line from the picture on the left side of the page to the picture on the right side of the page.

Teacher Tip: To make this rhyming words activity even more fun, place the light bulb cards around the room. Kids can then go on a search to find the light bulb cards to match them to the light strand strips.

Students can complete this Christmas Lights Rhyming Words Activity by doing the corresponding recording sheet.

Extension Activities

  1. Make up little jingles for each of the rhyming pairs. For example, “I saw a star when I was driving in my car.”
  2. Pick a light bulb card, identify the word on the light strand that rhymes, and mark it with a ball of play dough. Forming the play dough balls is a great fine motor activity!
