Christmas is around the corner, and you may be ready to prep some fun, hands-on learning activities for your classroom! This Christmas lights counting on math center is such a great, hands-on activity for Pre-K and Kindergarten kids to work on number identification, number order, and counting skills. It is sure to be a hit with your kids this holiday season!
Christmas Lights Counting On Activity
What you will need:
Draw light shapes on the cardboard/craft foam. Cut it out and mark it with numbers 1 to 10. (You can use bigger numbers for older kids too.)
Place the numbered lights together with the pegs on a surface to which you can tie the string. (We used an old computer stand for this.)
Time to Play!
Roll the die (or just choose the top light) to determine where to start counting. Find that numbered light.
Now clip it on to the string. What is the next number? (Count on.)
Now find that next number and clip it on too. Carry on until you run out of space on your string.
This activity not only works on mathematical skills like counting on and recognizing numbers, but fine motor skills, too (clipping with clothespins is tricky and builds up finger strength in early writers)!
You could also make it into an addition game by rolling the die to tell you where to start, and then rolling again to add on more lights to see where you end up!
A fun (and festive) way to practice counting on with Christmas lights!
