Christmas Lights Counting On Activity
This Christmas counting activity not only works on math skills like recognizing numbers and number sequence but fine motor skills too! Clipping with clothespins is tricky and helps to build up finger strength in early writers.
What you will need:
- Various colors of cardstock or craft foam
- Marker
- Mini clothespins
- String (optional – we used a short strand of Christmas lights for extra fun)
- Dice (optional)

How to Prep
Draw light bulb shapes on the cardstock/craft foam. Cut them out and mark them with numbers 1 to 10. You can use bigger numbers for older kids too.
Tie both ends of the string to two objects so that it is hanging upright. For this, we used a computer stand on each end.
Another option is to lay the string flat on a table and secure each end to the table with tape. Be sure to leave the string a little loose so that the kids have enough slack to slightly lift it and clip on the light bulbs.

How to Play
To determine where to start counting, roll the die and find that numbered light bulb. Or just place the light bulbs in a small cup or basket and have the kids draw from the pile.

Now, clip your first light bulb onto the string. What comes next? Count on!
Find the next number and clip it on too. Continue until you reach the end of your string.

Extension
You could also turn this into a fun addition game by using the dice to determine two numbers to add.
Roll the die. Find the matching light bulb and clip it on.
Roll again and count on the designated number of light bulbs in sequential order. See where you end up to find the sum!

Your kids will have a great time with this fun, festive way to practice counting on with Christmas lights!
