There are so many things to look forward to when the weather gets warm.  Searching for fireflies is one of them!  Playing outside at night is extra fun when you are young.  Catching fireflies in a jar to observe these bright little insects is a huge bonus.  Our Catch a Firefly Alphabet Match is the perfect game to go along with this summer activity!

We love catching fireflies outside in the summer. To pair with it, try this catch a firefly free alphabet match activity, for preschool and kindergarten!

Catch a Firefly Alphabet Match

This printable letter matching set includes 26 uppercase and 26 lowercase cards.  The empty bug catching jars have an uppercase letter on them.  The firefly cards have a lowercase letter on them.

To get started, print the alphabet matching activity from the file below.  Cut the jars and the firefly cards apart on the dotted lines.  If you are laminating the activity, laminate before cutting the cards apart to save yourself a step!

With matching activities, I like to put one set of cards out on the table or floor.  I spread them across the table so that all can be seen at once.  This makes it easier to find the matches.

Put all of the uppercase jars out and all of the lowercase fireflies in a basket.

Pull one firefly at a time out of the basket and catch a firefly by finding its match!

I love how versatile alphabet matching games can be!  They are easily differentiated and can test letter skills through simple observation.

The goal of the Catch a Firefly Alphabet Match is to correctly match each firefly to the corresponding jar.  Make it extra fun by turning off the lights and playing with a flashlight!  It will make you feel like you are outside at night searching for fireflies.

Other ways to play include setting up the jars and fireflies in a memory game.  Pick one small firefly and one larger jar card.  If they make a match, pick again!  Play until all of the matches are made.

It’s fun to build simple site words or CVC words with this activity.  Put out the jar cards to spell a word.  Encourage sounding out the word as the child matches each firefly letter.

However you choose to play, have fun catching fireflies!
