Warmer weather is here and the bugs have made their appearance! My kids get so excited during recess if they see butterflies, worms, caterpillars, ladybugs – you name it. I love to build off that interest by adding some fun, bug-themed learning activities to our day. These free Bug Addition Cards are a perfect way to get in some engaging and effective addition practice for bug lovers!

Bug Addition Cards

These addition cards are fairly easy to prepare. Simply print them out and laminate them for repeated use. After cutting them out, you are almost ready to go!

I place mine in a small basket with dry erase markers and socks (we use kid socks for erasers – the markers fit inside and it is a great storage system!).

I place the laminated addition cards in our math centers with dry erase markers for writing.

How to Play

I introduced this activity to my students in small groups. First, we picked up an addition card and took a minute to check out the cool bugs. 5 worms and 5 flies!

Next, we counted the bugs and wrote how many we had in the boxes, building the equation. Then we counted up all of the bugs to see how many total we had. 5 worms plus 5 flies equals 10 bugs altogether.

Students practice one-to-one correspondence as they point to each bug to count them.

We kept picking cards and building equations until we had solved them all. When we were done we erased the cards for the next group.

The kids couldn’t wait to play again the next day!

After counting, kids write the equation in the boxes below the bug pictures.
