Work on sums of 10 with a fun, basketball theme! This free Basketball Make 10 Game is perfect for math centers and small groups!

Basketball Make 10 Game

To get this game ready to go for my kids, I printed out the cards and mats (download below) and laminated them for repeated use.

I cut out the basketballs and placed them along with both math mats and copies of the recording sheet in our math centers. Then it was all ready for my kids to work on those sums of 10!

Print the math mats and print, cut, and laminate the basketball cards for a fun make 10 game.

How to Play

After the students pick up a basketball and read the equation, it’s time to decide where to put it! Does it equal 10 or not? There is a mat for sums of 10 and a mat for sums that are not equal to 10.

The circle and line through the hoop on the mat that does NOT equal 10 helps create a visual for kiddos who may need that extra support or are not able to read the title.

Students keep solving and sorting until all the basketballs are gone.

You can provide number lines if needed, or manipulatives for additional support. Sports-themed erasers can be really fun to use as tools to solve the problems!

Optional Recording Sheet

Sometimes it’s great to have an option for kids to show their learning, especially if you are using the game in independent math centers.

This Make 10 recording sheet is a perfect companion to the game! After sorting the basketballs, students will color the basketballs that equal 10.

The recording sheet provides a different way to apply their learning from the sorting game!
