With Back to School season upon us and fall just around the corner, it’s about time to bring out some fun learning activities with one of my favorite themes – apples! These free Apple Tree Counting Puzzles are perfect for helping students in Pre-K and Kindergarten identify numbers and count sets to 10!

*Pair with our Apple Centers and Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten!

These free Apple Tree Counting Puzzles for Pre-K & Kindergarten are great practice for number recognition and counting sets to 10!

Apple Tree Counting Puzzles

My students love puzzles so I just knew these apple-themed counting puzzles would be a hit. They are great for using in small groups, math centers, or even as a fun activity for early finishers. They’re fun, hands-on, and easy to prep!

I begin by printing them out on cardstock for sturdiness. I recommend also laminating them so that you can prep this activity just once and use it year after year.

Next, I cut the puzzle pieces apart so that I have basket cards numbered 0-10 and apple tree cards with 0-10 apples on them.

That’s it – we’re ready to play!

Students match the number of apples on the apple tree cards to the number on the basket cards.

How to Use the Counting Puzzles

I like to introduce games by playing them in a small group first, but you could also explain the directions for these counting puzzles and let your kids try on their own depending on how you think they will do.

Start by lining up the baskets from 0-10 (which is great for working on number order). I like to add the apple tree cards to a small basket to match the fun “apple picking” theme. Students pick up an apple tree card from the basket and count the apples. Last, they pair the apple tree up with the correct basket card.

Line the baskets up from 0-10 and have students start counting and matching.

Teacher Tip: Make these counting puzzles self-correcting by writing the number of apples on the back of each tree. After the kids put the puzzles together, they can turn them over to check their answer!
