Need an adorable apple activity for the beginning of the year? We’ve got you covered with this free Apple Beginning Digraph Sort! This activity focuses on the beginning digraphs CH, SH, TH, and WH.
*Pair it with our Apple Centers and Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten for tons of fall-themed fun!

Apple Digraph Sort Prep
The prep for this digraph sort activity is super easy. Simply print and cut. I used my paper slicer to make it even quicker.
If this is an activity you plan to use year after year, I recommend laminating for extra durability.

The Activity
Choose a flat surface to play on and lay out all of your apple tree cards. Spread them out so that you will have room to place the apples under them.
Go over each digraph and the sound it makes with your students before you begin. I love to have them repeat the sounds as we go over them.
Next, have a student choose an apple and identify the word in the picture.
Then, sort it under the apple tree with the correct beginning digraph sound. If a student is struggling, say the word with them and emphasize the digraph sound so that it models how to identify it in the word.
For example: If Johnny chooses a picture of a shoe, he will say “shoe”, then he will place it under the SH apple tree.

Students can continue to choose and sort their picture cards under the correct digraphs. There are six apple cards for each digraph.
Word and picture sorts are a wonderful way for young readers to develop phonemic awareness.
Once they have successfully sorted all of the apples, it is time to use the recording sheet!
This is a great way to check for understanding and also allows them to practice writing some of the words they sorted.
They can use the word bank to help them write two words for each digraph sound.
