Alphabet Match Mitten Activity
This alphabet activity is perfect for Pre-K and Kindergarten! It’s a simple one-to-one matching game that can be placed in a literacy center or even played in pairs with a partner. Plus, it’s a super fun extension activity to do after reading the book, The Mitten by Jan Brett.
Let’s get started with some simple supplies!
What you will need:
- Construction paper
- Black marker
- Cotton balls or winter-themed manipulative to “cover up” the letters (optional)
- ABC letters
- Small basket or grab bag
How to Prep
One of the things I like most about this activity is how it can be put together in an instant! It literally took me less than a minute.
Just grab a black marker and quickly sketch a large mitten onto a piece of construction paper.
You will then use the marker to also write the letters of the alphabet all over the inside of the mitten. Remember to scatter the letters around to make it more of a challenge.
How to Play
My favorite way to engage children with a letter matching activity is to place the letters of the alphabet inside of a grab bag or small basket.
Children love the suspense of not knowing what letter they are grabbing.

Students will then find the matching letter on the mitten. I like to have my children say the name of the letter out loud.
For older children, I like to challenge them by asking that they say the letter name, sound, and a word that begins with that letter.
Students will then use the ABC letter they grabbed from the bag to “cover up” the letter on the mitten.
Fun Tip: Use cotton balls to cover up the letters. This will make it look like snowballs in the mitten!
Teaching reading can be so much fun when we find creative, engaging literacy activities to help us along the way! I do hope that this alphabet match mitten activity is a fun addition to your literacy centers like it was ours!
