We’re kicking off our series of letter crafts with A is for Ant! Ants are a great subject for letter a, as the word is easy to spell and there are plenty of wonderful songs and resources about ants for young children.

Combine fun letter crafts like these with our interactive alphabet readers for even more ABC fun!

While my background is in Montessori, I really love using a combination of Jolly Phonics and Orton-Gillingham for teaching the alphabet and pre-reading skills. Jolly Phonics encourages movement along with the letter sound, while a central aspect of Orton-Gillingham is doing letter crafts that imitate the phonic represented – whether visually or through a the sensory experience of making the craft.

For our ant craft, we decided to do a play on the song “The Ants Go Marching” and have 3 letter “a” crafts in a line on our playroom wall – representing both an ant body and also the work of three of our children. We previously did a fingerprint ant craft for our “A is for Ant’s” week last year.

How to Make an A is for Ant Craft

First, gather your materials:

  • Black construction paper or cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Marker
  • Round object for tracing
  • Glue

First, use the round object to trace out circles on the black construction paper. This is a great hand-eye coordination activity and helps with shape identification, noticing that “a” is composed of a circle and a line, while also recognizing the spherical shape within ant bodies.

Have your child cut out the circles and also “sticks” or “legs” from the black construction paper.

And finally, glue the sticks onto the circles to shape a letter a.

These a is for ants letter crafts turned out perfectly and were easy enough for all of our kids to be able to do them without frustration. More craft-inclined children can further elaborate on their crafts, but just developing those tracing (pre-writing) and scissors skills are important for all kids.
