During the first weeks of school, one thing we really focus on is 3 ways to read a book. This is an important part of setting the tone for students seeing themselves as readers. In Kindergarten, the biggest part of that is “Reading the Pictures.” This is their primary form of reading for many different types of texts as they are learning the basics of reading! I am going to split up some of my favorite books for this strategy so be sure to check out part 2!

Books for Teaching Kids to “Read the Pictures” Part 1

First up for today, Good News, Bad News by Jeff Mack.

Good News Bad News has illustrations that are so vivid and perfect for teaching kids to read the pictures.

This book tells a story with only those 4 little words – and the illustrations are so vivid and fun! It is a funny read and the students love discussing what the “good news” or the “bad news” is. It is great for showing that we don’t have to read words to read a story.

Plus, the characters are so fun and I love their expressions! The repetitive pattern of the books makes it great for read alouds and retelling the story, and it quickly becomes a favorite!

The characters are so fun and full of expression.
Teaching kids to read the pictures can be done with a great image and very few words.

Definitely check this book out if you haven’t already! I highly recommend it! What are some of your favorite books for teaching kids to “read the pictures?”
