This free Unicorn CVC Word Match is the perfect literacy activity to boost practice with CVC words in a fun, hands-on way!

Unicorn CVC Word Match

This Unicorn CVC Word Match is great for Kindergarten and 1st grade students working on strengthening fluency with CVC words. The set includes 15 matches – 3 for each vowel (a, e, i, o, and u).

Your students will have a blast matching the CVC words with their pictures and you will love how quick and easy it is to prep!

How to Prep

To begin, simply print out the unicorn CVC word cards along with the rainbow picture cards. Laminate each page for durability and reuse in your literacy centers or small groups.

Lastly, cut the cards apart on the solid black lines to have the pieces all set for the matching game.

This CVC word match set includes 15 matches - 3 for each vowel (a, e, i, o, and u).

How to Play

I recommend introducing this game in your small groups. This allows you to practice the activity and tackle all of the matches before adding it to your literacy centers. Depending on the level of your students, you may choose to work on only one vowel at a time, or remove some cards so that it isn’t overwhelming.

Spread out the picture rainbows face up, and then draw a unicorn card. Read the CVC word aloud, practicing fluency skills by stretching out each sound – “/d/o/g/”.

After reading the CVC word find the matching picture card and pair the unicorn with its matching rainbow. Continue until all matches are made.

Students match the unicorn CVC word card with the rainbow CVC picture card.

When your students are familiar with the concept and feeling comfortable with the directions, place all the pieces in a small basket and add this super fun game into your literacy centers!

Not sure why, but 4 of the words/unicorns came out with a black background. So 4 words are not usable.

      Hi Tiffany,
You’ll want to make sure you are using the most updated version of Adobe Reader. If you need to download the update, you can do that here–>> https://get.adobe.com/reader/ If you are updated on that, then make sure you are printing from a desktop computer and not a phone or other device. Our printables are best printed from a desktop computer. Please let me know if we can help with anything else?
      Thank you!
