We love fun, seasonal crafts that also help us to create great memories. And any time my kids have the chance to paint with their hands, I know the activity will be a hit. This Thumbprint Flower Pot Craft is perfect to try in spring or summer. Our favorite way to use these flower pots is to turn them into sweet, personalized Mother’s Day gifts!

This Thumbprint Flower Pot Craft is a perfect spring or summer art activity for kids, and makes an excellent Mother's Day gift as well!

Thumbprint Flower Pot Craft

I have a confession to make… I don’t have a “green thumb,” but I LOVE to be out in a garden. The solution? Flowers in pots that I can refresh every season (or as needed as I fine tune my gardening skills)! This craft is also great for those who don’t have the space for a beautiful, lush garden.

My kids and I recently decided to add some personal touches to our flower pots! We chose to ditch the paint brushes and use our fingers to paint fun summer scenes on our pots. With just a few inexpensive supplies, we were able to create lasting memories and beautiful artwork with this Thumbprint Flower Pot craft!

Grab some terracotta pots, washable paint, and your favorite flowers to make this beautiful flower pot craft.

Let’s Gather our Supplies!

How to Make the Thumbprint Flower Pots

Step #1:  Create summertime scenes on the sides of the terracotta flower pots using only the kids’ thumbprints. This is the part that makes this craft so personal and special.

Begin by creating summertime scenes on the sides of the flower pots using only the kids' thumb prints.

Step #2:  I let my children use a small paint brush for the smaller details.  My daughter created a dragonfly with her thumbprints and decided to use the paint brush to add wings and antennae.

Here’s her beautifully painted final masterpiece!

When completed, each painted pot is a beautiful, unique masterpiece.

Step #3:  After you let the paint dry, fill the bottom of your flower pots with some soil.  Make sure to only fill it up about a quarter of the way so you have plenty of room to add your flowers.

Step #4:  Place your flowers directly in the middle of your flower pot and carefully fill in soil all around. Gently pack down the soil while making sure that your flower’s bulb and roots are completely covered.

Step #5:  Very carefully water your flowers so that you don’t overfill and wash off your beautiful flower pot artwork.

Step #6:  Place your adorable Thumbprint Flower Pots in the sun where you can see them often and remember the special memories you made!

This project was the perfect way to spend an early summer day! Don’t let this gorgeous summer pass you by without doing some gardening with the little ones in your life. I hope your kids enjoy making these as much as mine did!

    1. Hi there,

These are 4-inch terra cotta pots but this craft would work great with any size. Have a great week! 🙂
