Thanksgiving Writing Activities and Centers

One of my favorite things about our writing centers is that once kids learn the routines for them, they can do them fairly independently. That means I can give instructions early in the year, and then all year long as I change out writing centers, I am not having to reteach routines – that’s a win!

For these Thanksgiving writing centers, students will be introduced to the following vocabulary words: pumpkin pie, table, turkey, cornucopia, stuffing, squash, corn, and cranberries.

The included vocabulary cards come 4 to a page (8 words total) and are a great size to accompany all the activities. Be sure to laminate them for durability and reuse before adding them to your writing centers!

Let’s check out some of the fun activities included!

Write It! Strips

Kids love dry erase markers (at least mine do!) so when I add these vocabulary strips to our writing centers, they get so excited!

Just print the strips, laminate them, and then add them to your centers with the vocabulary cards. Your students can write, erase, and write again for tons of Thanksgiving-themed writing fun!

Thanksgiving Story Book

The possibilities are endless for our Thanksgiving story book! You could even send it home as a fun themed writing book for kids to work on writing with their families.

Print the pages double-sided and use the cover page to create a journal. Or you can just use single pages as writing prompts in your literacy centers.

With the story book, the goal is for kids to write a few sentences or a short story about the pictures.

Thanksgiving “Write the Room”

My kids’ favorite writing center is probably “Write It!” which acts as a write the room activity. You can place the cards around the room and they hunt to find them and record the words.

You can also place them in a bin at the table for them to pick from and record. They love it either way!

However you decide to use this activity, it’s sure to be a hit!

Students can find a vocabulary card around the room and write the word on the recording sheet.

Trace and Paste Printable

Work on writing and scissor skills too with the Thanksgiving Trace and Paste printable. This activity is fun, hands-on, and it gives students lots of practice with a glue stick too!

Kids trace the words and then cut and paste their matching pictures next to them (using the word cards to help if needed).

We use fun writing tools like crayons on the Trace and Paste printable.
