I love when my students love something. I love to see them engaged and excited over an activity that is helping them learn and grow.

As teachers we are often prepping and planning tons of things for our students – and rightly so, but sometimes the super simple stuff can do a great job too! Kind of like the whole “buy a kid a gift, but they want to play with the box” idea – sometimes kids don’t need all the frill!

Along with our super important number talks, These number games have been a staple in my classroom, and they are so low prep that teachers love them as much as the kids!

Materials Needed

The best part about these games (besides the fact that kids LOVE them) is that they require hardly any materials! All you need are: (affiliate links)

Playing the Number Games

With these materials I set up a couple of different games for my students.

At the beginning of the year we simply roll one die, count the dots, and write the number. Then repeat. Keep doing it and fill up that white board with numbers! You would be surprised at how much they love this!

Because they loved it so much, I kept the same materials and extended the game. We worked on writing higher numbers and combining sets as an introduction to addition. So we rolled two dice, counted the total dots, and wrote the number.

This is also great practice for getting them to identify the bigger number and count on from there rather than starting at 1  (so tricky!)

Finally, as they become ready to add 2 numbers together and use equations, they can roll the dice and record the numbers, creating a full equation with symbols.

Other ways to play include:

  • roll the dice and draw that number of dots (great for one to one correspondence!)
  • switch to numbered dice, roll and draw objects
  • roll two dice, subtracting the smaller number from the larger
  • add more dice – try 3!
