How do you like to teach beginning sounds? I love having new and fresh activities for each season to help keep the kids motivated and also trigger and develop their letter recognition skills along with their corresponding sounds. This free Snowman Beginning Sound Match with real photographs is the perfect winter activity to work on beginning sounds with your students!

Snowman Beginning Sound Match

This activity is easy to set up! Once you have printed and laminated the snowman cards, just cut along the dotted lines to make the puzzles.

I like to place the snowman body cards with the photos in a small basket and spread the snowman head cards with the letters out on a flat surface. Now it’s time to play!

How to Play

This beginning sound match is so simple and so fun! Kids start by picking a snowman photo card and identifying the picture and its beginning sound. Then they add it to the matching snowman letter card with the correct letter.

Once all the pieces (one head card and 2 body pieces) are put together they have “built the snowman.”

Another quick activity I like doing in class to help the kids practice their letter sounds is playing a game called “Make the Sound.” I use these cards to get the kids warmed up and ready to play with them on their own.

To play, I divide the class into two groups and assign a name for each group. The rules of the game are that when the teacher writes the letter on the board the students are to raise their hand/call out (you can decide the signal) and assign one person in their group to make the sound of the letter on the board.

If you have a document camera, you can slide these snowman heads underneath it and they can be introduced before the game and call out the letter sounds that way.

You can also place each snowman head in a pocket chart if working in small groups where the students can see the letters clearly.

Whether you use this activity in your small groups, literacy centers, or whole group, your students are sure to love practicing beginning sounds!
