Sight words are so important when learning to read. After all, they make up nearly half of what we see in text. We love practicing our sight words in lots of different ways. We especially love when we can turn sight word practice into fun activities or experiments, like this “magical” and free Rainbow Sight Words Activity! Your kids are sure to be amazed!

*Pair with our EDITABLE Sight Word Centers and Activities for Pre-K & Kindergarten!

Create "magical" rainbow sight words with this fun and free activity! Your kids will love writing sight words and watching them appear!

Rainbow Sight Words

My kindergarteners love painting, so when I told them our new sight word activity involved watercolors, they were thrilled!

Prep for this activity couldn’t be easier. Simply grab some washable watercolors, white crayons, and the rainbow printable (download below) and you’re all set. Gather your students and get ready to wow them!

Teacher Tip: Use markers over the white crayon – it will still act like “magic” and may be easier for independent work stations!

To begin, we write our sight words within the rainbow in white crayon. Be sure to write in the open spaces.

How to Create a Sight Word Rainbow

To begin, we write our sight words within the rainbow in white crayon. I usually hear comments like, “But I can’t see them!” That’s when I tell the kiddos that the surprise comes soon, they will just have to wait!

We continue to write sight words throughout the rainbow, being sure to write them in the open spaces (they won’t show up well with the paint otherwise).

Then, we begin to paint with our first color of the rainbow, RED. My favorite part of this activity is when the first student shouts, “I can see them!” They are always super excited to see that their sight words appear like magic!

Then, we begin to paint the rainbow colors in order on top of our crayon sight words.

We keep painting in rainbow color order until the whole rainbow is complete. We even add words to the clouds!

As it dries I have the students read their sight words to me, then they get to take their rainbows home to show their families. However, these also make a beautiful class display!

Immediately the rainbow sight words become visible through the paint. We even write on and paint the clouds.
