A huge part of early childhood is building up our number sense and learning how numbers work together. Learning about teen numbers is always a little tricky. My students love 10 frame activities so I knew 20 frames would be a great tool to help build these skills! This Pencil 20 Frame Math Activity makes a great math center for Kindergarteners to practice teen number recognition and counting!

Pencil 20 Frame Math Activity

When we learn about teen numbers, we often focus on the fact that teen numbers “start with a one” which means that they are “ten and some more.”  This can sometimes be a difficult concept for students to catch on to but this hands-on 20 frame math activity is great practice for modeling those tricky teen numbers.

It is so fun and the best part is it’s also easy-prep!

Print the number pencil cards, 20 frame recording sheet, and grab some crayons for an easy-prep math center!

How to Prep

To get this math center ready, print out the number pencil cards and laminate them for durability and reuse from year to year. Print a copy of the 20 frame recording sheet for each student and you’re all set!

Print the recording sheet double sided and there will be ten 20 frames – enough to record all numbers, 11-20!

Laminate the pencil cards for durability before cutting.

I like to place the number pencil cards in a small basket for the students to pull from. Add the 20 frame recording sheets and some crayons and you have a math center ready to go!

Pick a number pencil card and use a crayon to fill a 20 frame with the correct number of dots.

How to Use

So in my first small group that I played with, when we pulled our first pencil card of 11 we knew that we first needed to fill the ten frame. Then we added one more dot to make 11.

Next we pulled the number 18. Rather than count by ones to 18, we used our teen number strategy of “10 and 8 more” to fill up a ten frame first and then add 8 more dots.

We kept pulling number pencil cards and filling in 20 frames until all of the cards had been picked!

Keep pulling pencil cards and filling 20 frames until all of the cards have been picked.
