We love to use household items or things we already have on hand for fun learning activities whenever we can. For our latest learning game, we grabbed a muffin tin and small objects to play an engaging memory game!

This memory game is easy to play with items you already have around the house! Just grab a muffin tin and some small items, and get ready to have fun!

Memory games are great to practice the working memory. (Working memory is needed for copy work, written work, and mathematical skills.) This game also works on visual discrimination skills and fine motor skills too. All while having fun!

Setting up the Game

To play this game, use a muffin tin with at least twelve compartments. For younger kids you could use a 6 cup tin (with only 3 pairs to find), for older kids, a 24 cup tin (with 12 pairs to find). Of course, differentiate as needed for your kids, regardless of their age.

Choose twelve small objects, (if you are playing with a full tin) 2 of each to form pairs. I have used buttons here, but mini erasers, pompoms, small snacks or crackers, even different colored beans or small rocks could work.

Cover it up by using cupcake liners (silicone ones are great and can be reused) if you have them, or just paper scraps could work too if they can cover the space.

Playing the Memory Game

Take turns picking up two liners to reveal what is underneath. If they are a matching pair, take them out and keep them aside. If not, close it up again, remember where you have seen them, and try again with your next turn.

Like a traditional memory game, the winner will be the one with the most pairs.

Extending the activity

You can take this memory game even further and work on things like:

  • Counting the objects
  • Counting the pairs
  • Counting by two’s
  • Talking about the objects: naming them, what do they have in common, what colors, etc.

We love this fun memory game, and it is sure to be a hit with your kids too!
