Pumpkin Number Mats

To prepare these fun math mats for your students, first, print them out and laminate them so they hold up to the play dough and don’t tear. Then, grab your play dough and a dry erase marker and you are all set!

You can also use counters or other fun manipulatives such as mini erasers or pom poms to fill in the ten frames.

I like to use play dough for this activity because the pinching and forming of the number is great for strengthening little fingers and building up those writing muscles!

Pinching the play dough and forming the balls builds fine motor skills.

How to Play

To play, we first pinched off the pieces of play dough and rolled them into balls to fill in the ten frame. Then we formed the number with play dough.

When we were done filling in our ten frame and number, we practiced writing the number on the printing lines with a dry erase marker. We used fine tip dry erase markers so the students were able to grip them comfortably like a pencil.

After filling the ten frame, students will write the number on the line.

Teacher Tip: Store each dry erase marker in a kid’s sock. This makes an instant marker storage and eraser on the go!

These math mats work with numbers 1-10 and are great for learning number formation in a hands-on way. Plus, they’re perfect for introducing the concept of a ten frame and how it is used to show quantity and groups!

Students will use the play dough to fill the ten frame and the number in the corner of the mat.
