Count and clip cards are a fantastic way for children to engage with math skills. As I was making these, I carefully considered how children could learn to subitize at the same time.

Subitizing is just a fancy way of explaining how we can figure out the number of items in a group without counting. It’s a huge foundational skill in mathematics and also promotes math success in pre-k, elementary school, and beyond.

Print these cards on card stock. The first set of cards has simple math, but I don’t take that term lightly. Some children, even older children, are struggling with these foundational concepts. With some practice, children will become a pro with these and feel confident.

The forest animals are arranged on the cards in groups so children are easily able to identify the quantity. It will take some practice at first, but soon that memory recognition will be instantaneous, which is just what we want!

The second set of cards is for children who are ready to move onto the next challenge: addition.

My kindergartner and I have been working on subitizing a bit lately, and he showed me a great way to do these. He looked at the card and said “four plus six equals ten.”

Not all children will want or need to say these out loud, but many of them would really benefit from that because it incorporates auditory processing and learning.

Learning with a story

Another way to make this math activity meaningful and help it really stick is to incorporate a story with it! We have a favorite story with forest animals.

The Mitten by Jan Brett is a fantastic supplement to these forest animals count and clip cards. Read it aloud then set out the cards, and you will see how inviting they become.

If you do not have that book, then I encourage you to create your own story with forest animals. We do this all the time! Learning through stories has been proven to be an incredibly powerful teaching tool.

We hope you enjoy these forest animals count and clip cards as much as we do!
