As we near the Superbowl, football is definitely on the brain! This football CVC word game is a fun one to add into your reading instruction for some engaging learning for any little football fan!
Learning to read CVC words takes time and practice. Kids need to blend and then find meaning to the words they read. This matching game takes CVC words and then gives them meaning with their picture match.
To get the game ready, I print out the cards (below) and laminate them for repeated use. Then I put the football words in one pile and the goalpost picture cards in another.
I introduced this game in a small group, and my kids took turns grabbing a football word, reading it, and pairing it up with a goal post picture.
We played it in a non-competitive way, but you could play a version where it is timed, or if they get it right they keep the cards and the person with the most is the winner, etc. It really depends on what works best for your child or students.
This game works with all 5 short vowels and pairs up 15 CVC words and pictures. I love it for a simple review or even a reading center game. Several of my students love it because, well – it’s football!!
