It isn’t quite summer, but lately our spring weather has been so fabulous it has felt like it! To bring on the sunny vibes, we have added some bright and fun resources to our learning activities. This flip flop sight word match is a fun game to work on any sight words we need!

Flip Flop Sight Word Match

To make the sight word match, I printed out the sight word flip flops (download below) and made sure they had the sight words I wanted on both the left and right flip flop. The download is pre-populated with the Dolch pre-primer sight words, but it is fully editable. That means you can add whatever words you like! You can even add alphabet letters and do an ABC match.

After printing the download, I laminated the flip flops so that I can save them and use them several times. Then I cut them out on the lines so that they are in rectangles, and added the sight words we are working on to a basket as a literacy choice.

I first played this game in a small group. Our first step was sorting the flip flops, kind of like how you might sort puzzle pieces when you are getting ready to start building.

This is also a great way to practice right and left. We put all of the left flip flops on one side of the table, and the right flip flops on the other.

Then we took turns picking a card, reading the word together, and hunting for its match. Identifying a word, and then searching for it and identifying it again is a great way to help those sight words stick!

We played until we had matched them all up, then we scrambled them and went for it again! I recommend starting with 10 or less sight words and adding more or changing them out as needed. This way there aren’t so many pieces that it becomes overwhelming.

Don’t want to use this as a matching game? You can also use them as flashcards, number matches, alphabet match – the text is fully editable, so really it’s anything you can dream up!
