Counting Gumdrop Ten Frame Cards

As soon as I saw the gumdrops, I knew they would make a super fun learning activity (and a tasty treat!) These gumdrop ten frame cards are quick and easy to prepare. Simply print them out, laminate, grab some manipulatives, and you are ready to go!

If you prefer not to use real gumdrops, mini erasers or pom poms make a great alternative!

I chose to play with real gumdrops because it can be a fun and different addition to our normal activities!

How to Use the Ten Frame Cards

Kids pick one of the ten frame cards, read the number and number word, then count out that many gumdrops onto the ten frame.

Having the number word as well as the numeral on the card gives us some much needed practice on reading and recognizing number words by sight.

The cards go through the number 10, but you can also use them for addition practice and give kids an opportunity to work with decomposing numbers.

For example, “using BOTH  red and green gumdrops, show me how you can make 5. How many red did you use? How many green?”

This higher level thinking is great for kids who already have one to one correspondence down and are ready to work on addition and subtraction. This will let them see the variety of ways in which numbers can be made.

You can also ask, “Can you make the number a different way?” for an extra challenge.
