Catch a Firefly Alphabet Match Activity

The goal of the Catch a Firefly Alphabet Match is to correctly pair each firefly with the corresponding jar. This printable letter matching set includes 26 uppercase bug-catching cards and 26 lowercase firefly cards. Prep it once and reuse it for years to come. It’s sure to be a hit with your kids!

To get started, simply print the alphabet matching cards (download below). Cut the jars and the firefly cards apart on the dotted lines. I recommend laminating the cards for durability but be sure to laminate before cutting the cards apart to save yourself a step!

How to Play

With matching activities like this one, I like to put one set of cards out on the table or floor. I spread them across the table so that all can be seen at once. This makes it easier to find the matches.

Put all of the uppercase jars out and all of the lowercase fireflies in a small bag or basket.

Pull one firefly at a time out of the bag and catch a firefly by finding its match!

I love how versatile this alphabet match can be! It can be easily differentiated and you can test letter skills through simple observation.

Additional Ways to Play

Another option for play includes setting up the jars and fireflies in a memory game. Pick one small firefly and one larger jar card. If they make a match, pick again! Play until all of the matches are made.

It’s also great for building simple sight words or CVC words with the letter cards. Put out the jar cards to spell a word. Encourage sounding out the word as the child matches each firefly letter.

My favorite way to switch up this activity and make it extra fun is by turning off the lights and playing with a flashlight! It makes you feel like you are outside at night searching for fireflies.
